Two tunnels that the South Penn started in the 1880s, and were not used by the turnpike are the Quemahoning tunnel at the 106.3 mile marker and the Negro Mtn. tunnel at the 116.0 mile marker. Both were bypassed by the construction of a cut through a hill. The Quemahoning tunnel is the only tunnel that had the distinction of having had a train travel through it as it was intended. But it was used by a completly diffrent railroad. Notice the timbers that are lineing the ceiling. They are 12"x12" timbers.
